Obtaining a marriage license is an important step in making your marriage legal. Follow these guidelines on how to obtain a marriage license if you plan to wed in North Dakota.

Things You'll Need:

  • Marriage license application
  • Pen
  • Social Security card
  • Cash (check individual counties for other forms of acceptable payment)
  • Photo identification
  • Divorce decree or death certificate, if applicable
  1. Step 1

    Obtain an official marriage license application in person at any county clerk's office. Only an unmarried male and an unmarried female may marry in North Dakota. Applicants may apply for a license in any county, regardless of residence within the state.

  2. Step 2

    Present a Social Security card and valid photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport.

  3. Step 3

    Complete and sign the application.

  4. Step 4

    Pay the license fee and head to the altar. License fees and acceptable forms of payment vary between counties.

Tips & Warnings
  • If either applicant has been married previously, bring the certified document that ended his or her last marriage, such as a divorce decree, annulment paper or death certificate.
