How to Get a Marriage License in Mississippi

Obtaining a marriage license is an important step in making your marriage legal. Follow these guidelines on how to obtain a marriage license if you plan to wed in Mississippi.

• Divorce decree, annulment paper or death certificate, if applicable
• Medical certificates
• Valid identification
• Pen
• Cash
• Marriage license application

Instructions

1. Obtain a blood test from a private physician or a Mississippi county health department location. Mississippi law requires both bride and groom to be tested for syphilis in order to obtain a marriage license. Upon receipt of the blood test results, medical certificates will be issued.

2. Apply for the marriage license together in person at any Mississippi circuit clerk's office within 30 days of the date of the blood test. Applicants must bring their medical certificates. Residency is not required.

3. Present proof of age and identity. A driver's license, military identification card or passport are acceptable forms of identification. Some counties may also require applicants to show certified copies of birth certificates.

4. Fill out the application and sign it in the presence of the county clerk. Applicants may also be asked to provide Social Security numbers, addresses and telephone numbers, marriage officiator information, father's and mother's full name (maiden) and state of birth for both applicants.

5. Pay the license fee and head to the altar. There is a 72-hour waiting period before the license is issued.
