Instructions

    • 1

Apply for the marriage license at the office of any County Registrar of Vital Records. The license is valid anywhere in Iowa. Residency is not required. The bride, groom and one witness (all 18 years of age or older) must appear in person to submit an application.

    • 2

Present proof of age and identity. A driver's license, state-issued birth certificate or passport are acceptable forms of identification for this purpose.

    • 3

Fill out the application. Applicants may also be asked to provide Social Security numbers, addresses, telephone numbers and father's and mother's full name and state of birth for both applicants.

    • 4

Pay the license fee and head to the altar. Once the county registrar of vital records receives the completed application, either the future bride or groom may pick up the license any time after three business days. If the license is not picked up within six months from the date of application it is considered null and void.

    • 5

If either applicant has been married previously, bring the certified document that ended his or her last marriage, such as a divorce decree, annulment paper or death certificate.
