How to Keep Ice Frozen as Long as Possible
Keeping ice frozen is one of the keys to a successful camping trip. Finding ice when camping in a remote location can be very difficult, if not impossible, so it needs to be treated like a precious resource. There is no way to totally keep ice from melting, but a few simple tips will keep it frozen as long as possible.

1
Buy a quality ice chest. This cooler should be large with good insulation, a sturdy lid, a drain plug and an inside bin for items you don't want sitting in cold water.
-
2
Bring one cooler for beverages and a separate cooler for food.
-
-
3
Chill food and drinks before you pack them into the chest.
-
4
Wash all perishable food (fruits & veggies) before leaving home. Chemicals on the food can make the ice melt faster.
-
5
Avoid opening the cooler very often, particularly during the warm afternoon, because that lets in warm air, which melts the ice.
-
6
Keep food dry. Place it in separate airtight bags or sealed plastic containers.
-
7
Use block ice. Block ice melts much slower than bagged ice.

Tips & Warnings
When possible, keep the cooler in the shade and covered with a heavy blanket. Even burying the cooler in sand will provide extra insulation.
Read the instructions if you use dry ice instead of frozen ice. Dry ice can cause problems if not handled properly.
