How to Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit in Colorado
There are several ways to qualify for a disabled parking permit in Colorado. You need a valid medical certification of legal blindness, limited mobility, pulmonary restriction or cardiac condition. You are eligible if you cannot walk without an assistive device such as a wheelchair, cane or brace. Mobility impairment due to arthritic, neurological or orthopedic conditions also qualifies. Obtaining a disabled parking permit is a relatively simple process--follow these steps to learn how.

Meet one of Colorado's qualifications for impaired vision, limited mobility or other qualifying condition.

Print the Application for Persons with Disabilities Parking Privileges form online and complete the top portion. Select a qualifying condition and indicate whether you would like to receive 1 or 2 placards.

Take the form to a licensed physician or other valid medical provider who can certify your condition and sign the application.

Submit the application to your local motor vehicle office. You will receive a red placard for a temporary permit or blue for permanent disability. There is no fee for either temporary or permanent placards.

Hang the placard from the rearview mirror when parking in a parking space reserved for the disabled.

Submit the application with a copy of your vehicle title or registration to your local motor vehicle office. To receive a Disabled Veteran Plate, also provide a written statement of the permanent disability being service-rendered on the appropriate letterhead from the Veterans Administration or branch of service.

Tips & Warnings
Temporary permits are valid for up to 90 days. Permanent placards expire after 3 years.
You may use your placard without owning or driving the vehicle you are in, but carry the Disability Placard receipt as proof of ownership.
Renew disabled plates annually.
Do not lend the parking permit to anyone. Misuse of a parking permit is subject to a fine and may result in the placard being confiscated.
Do not leave the placard hanging on your rearview mirror while driving.
If your placard is stolen, you must file a police report and notify a motor vehicle office immediately.

i have handicap parking #523255 good to july 2010. i do not have the paper that is issued at the time the parking hanging tag is issued. Apparently it was stolen at the time my tag was stolen you replaced only the hanging tag. now i have a ticket for parking in a parking place and forgeting to post the hanging tag. i sent copy of the tag to ticket office and learned yesterday ticket has esclated to booting as they did not recognize as valid the hanging tag copy only. they want also the paper work that goes with it. on looking in my car glove compartment for this i realize it must have been stolen at the same time the hanging tag was stolen. please send me the paper as soon as possible. i cannot even get my auto licenses renewed until i get this in to the ticket office i was not notified by them that they had not accepted my hanging tag alone until today and in that letter was ...
