Organize your tools on a pegboard in a convenient spot in your garage to clean up your workbench and keep frequently used tools within easy reach. Here's how it's done.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paintbrushes
  • Pegboard hooks
  • White indoor alkyd primer
  • Painters tape
  • Tools
  • Alphabet stickers or stencils
  • Pegboard accessories
  • Pegboard

Step1
Organize your tools into groups of similar items. Select the tools you use frequently to put on the pegboard. Put the remaining tools neatly back into drawers and toolboxes.
Step2
Decide where you want each group of tools to hang on your pegboard. Place the most frequently used items, such as hammers and screwdrivers, in the center of the board at eye level. Long items like brooms and rakes should be hung up high, off to the side, with their handles hanging down.
Step3
Use painters' tape to section off your pegboard into squares of various sizes. Make sure each section is the right size for the tools you plan to hang within it.
Step4
Create a color-coded system on your pegboard by painting each section a different color, using a large paintbrush and acrylic paints. Wipe wet paint out of the peg holes with a small paintbrush to prevent blockage.
Step5
Remove the tape when the paint has dried to reveal white dividing lines. Touch up the stripe with white acrylic paint if any color bled under the tape during painting. Allow white paint to dry.
Step6
Buy pegboard hooks and accessories at your local home improvement store to hang each type of tool. Tools with holes in the handle can be hung on a hook, while smaller items will need to be placed in trays or bins on the board.
Step7
Hang hooks and accessories on your pegboard in the squares you have designated for each grouping. Add your tools. Move hooks around to space items out if they are too crowded.

Tips & Warnings

  • After your paint dries, you can label each section with alphabet stickers or a stencil and acrylic paint.
  • If white pegboard isn't available, paint it white using an indoor alkyd primer.
