How to Enjoy a Train Ride From Durango to Silverton, Colorado

Have you ever wanted to take a train ride behind a classic steam locomotive? Instructions

      Purchase tickets in advance to ensure you get a seat on the train. During the summer vacation season, the train can fill to capacity.

      Plan for a full day. Departure times range from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. with return times ranging from 4:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

      Arrive at the train station 15 to 30 minutes before your departure time.

      Take your seat on the train. All seats are good. Try to get a seat that will give you a view out of both sides of the train.

      Enjoy the scenery on your trip to Silverton. In Silverton, eat lunch and enjoy the western feel of the town.

      Return to the train station in Silverton 15 minutes before your departure time. Try to sit in a seat that will give you a chance to see things you might have missed on the earlier train ride.

      Arrive back in Durango and eat dinner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Several types of train cars are available for your trip. If you take the trip in an open-air car, wear glasses or sunglasses to protect your eyes from the coal residue from the steam locomotive.
