How to Drive in Greece
The best way to tour Greece is by car. Driving will allow you to explore the beautiful country, but if you've never done it before, use these steps to make sure you'll travel smoothly.

Get an International Driver's Permit (IDP) at any American Automobile Association (AAA) branch. A permit is required to drive in Greece and to get it you must be at least 18 years old, have two 2-by-2-inch photos, your driver's license, the fee and your AAA application.

Rent a car. Your travel agent can help you find a good deal, or you can book your own car online at a rental car company Web site.

Know what kind of gas the rental car takes. Most will either take unleaded (amoliwdi wensina) or super unleaded. If you fill up at a full-service station, be sure that your attendant knows what kind of gas to fill.

Know the speed limits. The speed limit on expressways and dual carriageways is 120 kph. The speed limit is 119 kph on open roads and 50 kph inside town. Always observe posted speed limits to avoid being pulled over.

Familiarize yourself with traffic signs and Greek driving phrases. "Orio tahititas" means speed limit. Use your Greek phrase book to translate other road signs.

Equip your car with a warning triangle, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher as required by law. It is also recommended that you carry a visibility vest and replacement bulbs.

Always carry a road map of Greece with you.
Be sure to ask your local insurance agent if you need to purchase special insurance from the car rental agency.
Gas stations are sparse. Never allow your fuel tank to get too empty.
Always park on the right side of the road. Your car must not face the traffic.
Do not park within 3 meters of a fire hydrant or 15 meters of a bus stop.
Seat belts must be worn by everyone in the car
Children under 10 cannot ride in the front seat.
You must be at least 18 to drive in Greece.
Multi-tone horns are illegal in Greece.
