The best way to see the loveliness of Belgium is by car. Driving will allow you to explore and get lost in the beauty of the country. If you've never done it before, here are a things you should know.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Insurance
  • Maps of Belgium
  • International Driver's Permit
  • French and Dutch phrase books
  • Gas money
  • Driver's license
Step1
Apply for an International Driver's Permit (IDP) at any American Automobile Association (AAA) branch. Check the local phone book to find the AAA closest to you. To get your permit, you must be at least 18 years old, have two 2-by-2-inch photos, your driver's license, the fee and your AAA application.
Step2
Rent a car. Your travel agent can help you find a good deal, or you can book your own car at a rental car company Web site.
Step3
Know what kind of gas your car takes. Most rental cars either take unleaded petrol, diesel or LPG. If you go to a full-service station, be sure to tell the attendant what type of gas to use.
Step4
Know the speed limits. The speed limit on a motorway is 120 kph. Open roads have a speed limit of 90 kph, and town speed limits are 50 kph.
Step5
Familiarize yourself with traffic signs. Belgium follows the Geneva Convention and uses international road signs. "Sortie" or "uitrit" means exit. "Entree" or "toegang" means entrance. "Detour" or "Omleiding" means detour. Use your Dutch and French phrase books to translate other signs.
Step6
Know what to do if your car breaks down. Move your car to the right side of the road. Call 101 for police service. You will also need to notify your rental car agency.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always carry a Belgium map with you.
  • Most Belgium cities have paid parking meters along the street.
  • You may also park in areas designated with a blue line for up to three hours, but you must have a cardboard clock to park here. Purchased one at a gas station.
  • Be sure to ask your local insurance agent if you need to purchase special insurance from the rental car agency.
  • Seat belts must be worn by everyone in the vehicle.
  • You must be at least 18 to drive in Belgium.
  • Children under 12 must ride in the back seat.
  • It is required that you carry both a warning triangle and visibility vest in your car.
