The best way to see the grandeur of Austria is by car. Driving will allow you to get lost exploring the beauty of the country. Patience and intuition is required since driving in Austria can be confusing if you've never done it before.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Insurance
  • International Driver's Permit
  • German phrase book
  • Maps of Austria
  • Phone number for your rental car agency
  • Gas money
  • Driver's license
Step1
Apply for an International Driver's Permit (IDP) at any American Automobile Association (AAA) branch. Check the local phone book to find the AAA closest to you. To get your permit, you must be at least 18 years old, have two 2-by-2-inch photos, your driver's license, the fee and your AAA application.
Step2
Rent a car. Your travel agent can help you find a good deal, or you can book your own car at a rental car company Web site.
Step3
Know what kind of gas your car takes. Most rental cars either take regular 91 octane unleaded (bleifrei), 95 octane unleaded (euro-super bleifrei), 98 octane super unleaded (super plus bleifrei), diesel or LPG (autogas). If you go to a full-service station, be sure to tell the attendant what type of gas to use.
Step4
Purchase an autobahn vignette and place it on the inside of your windshield if you plan to drive on the autobahn (interstate). You may purchase this sticker at Austrian gas stations and border crossings. Fines are enforced for failing to display a valid sticker.
Step5
Familiarize yourself with traffic signs. Austria follows the Geneva Convention and uses international road signs. "Ausfahrt" means exit. "Einbahnstrasse" means one-way. "Gefahr" means danger. Use your German phrase book to translate other signs.
Step6
Know what to do if your car breaks down. Move your car to the right side of the road. Foreign motorists can call 123 for vehicle assistance and towing service. For an ambulance, call 144. You will also need to contact your car rental agency.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always carry an Austrian map with you.
  • Paid parking zones are marked by blue lines on the street.
  • Be sure to ask you local insurance agent if you need to purchase special insurance from the rental car agency.
  • Seat belts must be worn by everyone in the vehicle.
  • Headlights must be used in tunnels.
  • You must be at least 18-years-old to drive in Austria.
  • Do not park in an area labeled "Halten Verboten."
