Measuring the length and width with precision will not guarantee your project is square. In this article you will learn the formula that can ensure your projects will be square every time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ruler

Step1
Start with the corner that should be square. You will be measuring along the two outer edges that form this corner.
Step2
Use the following formula:
--Mark one of the sides from the corner at 3 feet, 3 inches, 3 centimeters or 3 whatever, as long as the other measurement is of the same value.
--Mark the other side at 4 feet, 4 inches, 4 centimeters or 4 whatever (same value as other measurement).
--The distance between the two marks needs to be 5 feet, inches, centimeters or whatever (same value as other measurement).
Step3
Adjust as follows, if the distance between the two marks does not equal 5:
--If the distance between the two is less than 5, spread the two points to open up the distance.
--If the distance between the two is more than 5, tighten up the distance by bringing the two points closer together.

on 5/31/2007 Yes… the 3,4,5 method, very handy for large projects. For smaller project it is much easier and more accurate to measure from corner to corner of any rectangle or square. Most peoples think that just because all the sides of a square are even than the project is square for building; not so. A measurement from inside corner to inside corner in a criss-cross fashion will tell one if their project is building square… the measurement must be exact.

I have drawings on this process here, under the chapter of framing
