It's no exaggeration to call the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture an extraordinary site. The striking modern structure pays particular attention to incredible American Indian creations but boasts artwork and artifacts from all over the globe as well; the neighboring Campbell House mansion, included in your admission cost, is also worth a look.

Re-enact "Sideways" and have your own wine-y outing at a few of the worthwhile wineries in the city. Barrister Winery, on West Railroad Avenue, is a fine choice (try the Merlot), and Latah Creek Wine Cellars on East Indiana Avenue makes for a nice visit with a Spanish Mission-style structure and extensive gift shop.

Seek out a remarkable restaurant tucked away in a charming neighborhood-Café Marron Browne's Addition. Located on South Cannon Street in the Browne's Addition district, this cozy little eatery takes its inspiration from the Basque country in the Pyrenees Mountains and the resulting creations are sumptuous and savory.

Families in particular will enjoy an afternoon at Riverfront Park, located on an island in the Spokane River which flows through the city. Pretty picnicking areas, a wonderful old carousel, IMAX theater and "floating gondola" SkyRide are just some of the diversions.

See what's happening at CenterStage on West First Avenue, showcasing everything from dance lessons to movie nights to live plays and concerts; frequent dinner theater is also presented. Upstairs, you'll find another fine evening outing--Ella's Supper Club, known for live music (often jazz) five nights a week and some inviting wine and appetizer pairings.

Enjoy some of the region's rugged and unspoiled outdoors by visiting Riverside State Park in the city's northwestern realms, a hiker's paradise with more than 30 miles of trails. A nifty swinging suspension bridge built in the 1930s is a highlight for many, and you'll also find plenty of picnic tables and good campsites.

Spokane knows how to throw a party, so consider coming to town for one of the city's big celebrations. The Lilac Festival in mid-May is always festive, and includes a big sandcastle building contest and a dramatic torchlight parade; another fine fiesta is the annual Allegro's Royal Fireworks Festival and Concert, a terrific tribute to the Baroque period showcasing the culture of that era with plenty of food, music and a fantastic fireworks finale.
