Appreciating modern art can be easy if you are willing to look at things and art in a different way. Modern art can improve your own creativity and expand your horizons.
First go to any local art museum. A modern art museum is preferable. Try to view as many examples as possible. You will start seeing very different styles.

As you watch every piece, remember to not look for any physical representation first. Enjoy color, contrast, darkness, texture and other visual/tactile attributes as they are. All these should translate into different emotions.

Next is composition. The elements of color, contrast, darkness and texture should give alternating composition and patterns. Look into negative space to see additional patterns.

finally, another great exercise is to now try to see what the artist tried to convey. Reading the name of the artist, title of the piece and description last will help you get a unbiased judgement.
