The right shoes are the most important equipment for any walker. They will protect your feet from injury, cushion your body, and provide stability. Typically, walking shoes should be flexible and supportive throughout your walking stride. Here's how to pick the right walking shoes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Try on many shoes of the sneaker, hiking, and sturdy variety. You will have a better idea of what will work if you audition a range of shoe styles.
Step2
Check that the shoe is flexible where your foot is flexible. If it's too stiff, it will cause foot pain.
Step3
Check the back of the shoe, behind the heel, for stability. It should be stiff for good support. Look for ankle support--a higher shoe--if you will be walking on uneven ground.
Step4
Ensure that the shoe comfortably fits with the socks you'll be wearing. The most expensive walking shoes in the world will not perform if they don't fit.
Step5
For warm weather, look for a shoe with mesh so your foot can breathe and won’t get sweaty. In a rainy climate where a water-resistant shoe is necessary part of the year, consider getting a summer version to keep your feet comfortable.
Step6
Walk around wearing the shoes in the store to ensure they're a good fit, and don’t be shy about asking for advice from other customers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to buy the proper socks. Socks that breathe and provide plenty of cushion are best. Thin cotton will stay wet and create blisters.
