Starting an exercise routine can be intimidating and confusing, but walking is an easy and less scary way to get out there and get fit. Plus, walking doesn’t require a gym membership or lots of expensive gear. All you need is a road or trail, and some time. Here's how to walk for fitness.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear comfortable shoes with skid-proof soles. Wear shoes that are broken in.

  2. Step 2

Choose your route. If you haven’t been active in a long time, make your first walks easy, pleasant and short. You don’t want to discourage yourself by getting tired.

  3. Step 3

Dress for the weather. Take along a rain jacket if showers are threatening, dress in layers if you start early and walk as the day warms up. Dress smart and comfortable.

  4. Step 4

Limit yourself to a short outing until you get a sense for what you are comfortable with. Even a 10-minute walk around the block will get you started on a road to a healthier you.

  5. Step 5

Take safety precautions. Consider not wearing headphones so you can hear what’s around you, bring a cell phone or whistle so you can call for help if needed. Remain aware of what’s going on around you

  6. Step 6

    Have fun.
