Prison is not free of expenses for inmates. There are many things prisoners have to purchase on their own, such as postage stamps. Getting a job in prison can provide cash and help prisoners to develop new skills that may help them after they are released.

Find Work Legally in Federal Prison

  1. Step 1

Understand that federal prisoners are required to work while incarcerated. Exceptions are made, however, for inmates who are medically incapable of working.

  2. Step 2

You could work as an orderly, groundskeeper, painter or food service worker. You may also find a job in a Federal Prison Industries factory.

  3. Step 3

Remember that you will earn money for any work you perform while incarcerated. The money you earn will be deposited into your inmate account.

  4. Step 4

Check the requirements of the job you hope to obtain. Some jobs require a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.

  5. Step 5

Ask a corrections officer to tell you about any available work programs.

  6. Step 6

Visit the Federal Bureau of Prisons Web site (see Resources below) to obtain more information about federal prison work programs.

  7. Learn About Work Release Options While Incarcerated

  8. Step 1

Inquire about whether your corrections facility offers a work release program, which allows some prisoners to maintain gainful employment in community settings.

  9. Step 2

Understand that inmates in work release programs are required to return to prison when work hours end.

  10. Step 3

Inmates accused of certain crimes, such as sex crimes, may be ineligible for work release programs.

  11. Work Legally in State Prison

  12. Step 1

Understand that a medically able inmate may be required to work any job that is assigned to him.

  13. Step 2

Remember that a less desirable position could serve as a stepping stone to a better prison job.

  14. Step 3

Look for advice and support in negotiating prison life on the Prison Talk Web site (see Resources below).

  15. Step 4

Report to work on time and complete your assignments. Doing so may help you to obtain a better assignment and will also impress the parole board.

Tips & Warnings
  • Understand that inmates are not always permitted to keep all the money they earn in prison. If you owe child support, a portion of your earnings may be garnished. You also could be required to pay towards monetary judgements and fines.
