How to Find the Release Date for a Prisoner

You can discover the release date for any prisoner with minimal research. Follow these steps.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet or phone access
  • Prisoner's full name or inmate number

    Find the Release Date of Someone in State Prison

  1. Step 1

    Visit the Correction Connections Web site (see Resources below) to find links to state correction agencies .

  2. Step 2

    Roll your mouse over the "Resources" link and click on the "Links" selection from the drop-down menu.

  3. Step 3

    Click the "Correctional Facilities" link and choose the relevant department of corrections or facility from the list.

  4. Step 4

    Look for a link to prisoner information on the correctional facility's Web site. If no such link exists, call to request the prisoner's release date from a corrections representative.

  5. Step 5

    Check the inmate's release date periodically to stay abreast of changes.

  7. Step 1

    Go to the Federal Bureau of Prisons Web site (see Resources below).

  8. Step 2

    Click on the "Inmate Locator" link.

  9. Step 3

    Enter the inmate's first and last name in the appropriate form fields.

  10. Step 4

    If possible, enter the race, age and sex of the prisoner using the drop-down menus.

  11. Step 5

    Click on the "Start Name Search" link.

  12. Step 6

    Review the list of inmates to find release dates and other information about federal prisoners.

  13. Discover the Release Date for Someone in County Jail

  14. Step 1

    Go to the Correction Connections Web site (see Resources below) to find links to county prisons.

  15. Step 2

    Roll your mouse over the "Resources" link and select "Links" from the drop-down menu.

  16. Step 3

    Choose "County Links" from the available choices.

  17. Step 4

    Click the link for the sheriff's office, correctional facility or department of corrections in the appropriate county.

  18. Step 5

    Search by name for the prisoner's release date on the department or facility's Web site. If a release date is not posted, call the facility.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware that release dates are subject to change at any time. It is possible that an inmate will be released later or earlier than the posted release date.
