How to Add People to Your Friend's List in Second Life

One of the most rewarding parts of belonging to the Second Life virtual world is making friends. As the avatars saunter around a location and chat, you may find someone especially interesting or helpful. But how do you locate this individual at a later time? With your friendship list, you can see if a friend is logged in, arrange meetings and go to parties. Follow these steps to build your list of friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Second Life home page and register if you haven't already done so (see the Resources section below). Download the "Second Life Client."

    • 2

Enter Second Life through the green Second Life icon on your desktop and click "Connect." You will find your avatar in a public location, most likely surrounded by others.

    • 3

Ask questions of other avatars to start a chat. "Old hands" at Second Life are generally willing to help out newcomers.

    • 4

Right-click an avatar to add that new friend to your list. Select "Add Friend" to automatically update your list.

    • 5

Add a friend to your list at any time. On the "Connect" page, open your list in "Friends." Select "Add" and type your friend's name. When you perform this action, the other person will receive the message: "So-and-So [your screen name] has offered you friendship."

    • 6

Talk to others about what groups they belong to. You may be able to join a friend's group.

    • 7

Get your friend's permission to add the ability to find him or her on a map and to share objects. Select these choices under that friend's name on your list.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click on any avatar to see a person's profile. You can find out when he joined, what activities he participates in and what groups he belongs to.

  • Review the "Meet People" guidelines available on the Second Life Web site (see Resources below).

  • Faceless virtual friendship can be fun, but it can also be dangerous. There is no way to verify the real-life individual behind the avatar. Do not give out any personal information.

  • If anyone harasses or shadows you, or intrudes on you in any way, contact the site owners. Second Life has rules of conduct and disciplinary procedures to enforce them (see Resources below).
