How to Teleport to Locations in Second Life

"Teleporting" brings to mind pictures out of science fiction, such as the Star Trek transporter that converted people to atoms. Fortunately, the only thing you need to "teleport" yourself to locations in the virtual world of Second Life is a computer mouse. One click and you can go to a party, watch a movie or explore an island in the user-created spaces that populate this international site. Here's how.

Things You'll Need

  • Second Life Client download
  • Computer with Internet access via DSL or cable modem

Instructions

    • 1

Become a member of Second Life via the Web site's home page (see the Resources section below). Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for Second Life before you download the "Second Life Client."

    • 2

Click on the green hand icon that appears on your desktop after you download "Second Life Client." Click "Connect."

    • 3

Place your mouse on "Map" or "Mini-Map" on the toolbar. You will see what looks like satellite maps of several popular "island" sites, including "Orientation Island" and "Help Island." Locations are marked in yellow.

    • 4

Select one of the locations or find more in the ever-present box. Click "Teleport" on the bottom toolbar to get to your selection.

    • 5

Enter the name of a specific location into the "Search" tool and then click "Teleport" to travel directly to that address.

    • 6

Get to an event, class or activity. Select it from the event menu or calendar and click on "Teleport."

Tips & Warnings

  • The "Map" button takes you to any location you select from the map. "Mini-Map" shows only places near your current location.

  • Learn more about standard teleporting procedures from "Second Life: The Official Guide" (see Resources below).

  • Some locations are restricted to adults only, others to premium (paid) users. Those under 18 or who have a free membership cannot teleport to these places.

  • Depending on the age and capacity of your computer, you may experience some difficulties with Second Life. It may freeze, crash or load very slowly. Some images may be blurred or seen as constantly changing size, shape and color.
