How to Upgrade to a Premium Second Life Account
The Second Life virtual world is fascinating to explore. Morphing an avatar, chatting with someone halfway around the world, entering others' creations--you can do all this with a basic subscription, which costs nothing. But eventually you may feel the urge to build something of your own and to find out what's on those islands you can't access. Fortunately, it's easy to upgrade to a premium account. Follow these steps.

Tips & Warnings
Fees quoted on the sign-up page are monthly. Search in "Accounts" to find discounts for paying yearly (see Resources below).
You don't need to choose the most expensive membership the first time. Try one of the lower-cost levels first. You can always upgrade again.
You can only build objects on land, and only the most expensive premium account permits you to buy land and access all features. You can, however, build without land of your own in "sandbox" areas run by other members.
You make all payments online. This involves giving your credit card or PayPal account number. Second Life is a reputable site, but if you have any qualms about sharing your financial information, you should not do so.
