Digital audio systems and satellite networks such as Sirius and XM Radio have become all the rage. What better way to show your dedication to digital radio than to have a portable system when you’re on the go? Use these steps to find a digital audio broadcasting system for your car.

From Quick Guide: Drive with Volume
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose your service. The two main services available in the U.S. and Canada are Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio. Both of these services require paid subscriptions to access their broadcasts. Review the list of exclusive contracts each service holds and see which has the most appeal for your listening habits.

  2. Step 2

Determine if your car’s stereo can handle satellite sound. If your car is not equipped for satellite sound, you can either buy a unit that will install into the dashboard or a portable system that can be docked both in your home and car. Depending on which option you choose, this can cost between $50 and $500, plus installation fees.

  3. Step 3

Shop around. Satellite radio receivers can be purchased in any number of department stores, discount stores, drug stores and, of course, electronics stores. Stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart carry satellite radio. They may come with gift cards redeemable for subscription services, as well. Watch current pricing and ad trends to get the best deal.

  4. Step 4

Get hooked up by a trusted professional. Digital radio system installation is not an amateur event. Improper installation may void your new system’s warranty and leave you with very expensive paperweights if the wiring isn’t done correctly.

Tips & Warnings
  • As announced on February 19, 2007, Sirius and XM are scheduled to merge, pending government approval.
  • If purchasing a unit that can be used both in the home and car, find out if your homeowner’s insurance, renter’s insurance or car insurance covers damage, replacement or theft.
  • Don’t attempt to install your own digital stereo system unless you're a trained professional. Improper installation can void the warranty, leaving you responsible for any damages and replacements costs.
  • If the radio significantly improves the value of your car, your insurance premiums could rise as a result. By listing the radio on the insurance, however, it will normally be covered in case of theft or accident.
