Computer speakers have a tendency to break down after a while, just like any other speakers. The problem is that computer speakers are not made to withstand heavy bass from video games and music, which is what most are used for today. If your computer speakers are broken, you may want to find someone to fix them. Follow these steps to handle fixing computer speakers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out every aspect of your speakers in order to diagnose the exact problem. Note the sound your speakers are making, if any, and check to see if the speakers are unusually hot during use. These can all be symptoms of the problem.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the problem is with the speakers and not the computer itself. Check the connections from the speakers to the computer while the speakers are turned on and the volume is turned up. Many times, fixing dead air from computer speakers is as simple as un-clicking the mute control.

  3. Step 3

Write down the make, model and serial number of your computer speakers. Find the respective Web site of your speakers' manufacturer such as Sony or Bose. Read through any self-help sections on the site and write down any tech support phone number you find.

  4. Step 4

Seek advice from a local electronic vendor, such as Best Buy or through the computer's manufacturer, such as Dell or Apple. These sites or the tech help support line can at least point you in the right direction to accurately diagnose the problem.

  5. Step 5

Ask people you know who are into electronics and sound systems for their advice. Perhaps they can fix it for you or they might at least have knowledge of someone who can do it at a reduced price.

  6. Step 6

Make your decision on the person who can repair your stereo speakers based on cost and reputation. Consider timeliness of service as well, since it could take a few weeks or even longer to fix your speakers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider the vendor's reputation. Experience is essential, as you want to find someone who has dealt with the your specific problem before.
  • As you're going through the process, learn as much from the experts as you can. You may find yourself in this situation again at which point it will be good to have this new knowledge.
  • Electronics have life spans just as other objects do. Make sure you're receiving a valuable product if you're going to shell out money for it. It may be a better bet to purchase new speakers instead of repairing old ones.
