You'll need to compare HDTV models before you buy to get the best quality at the price you want to spend.

1. Determine how much money you are willing to spend. Prices on HDTVs vary as widely as the sizes to choose from.

2. Consider the size of the TV you are looking for. HDTVs come in a wide range of sizes and shapes ranging from 10 inches, in the LCD models, up to 80 inches in rear projection screens. But also consider depth when looking at the size you want. Typically, LCD and Plasma models are thin, in the range of 2.5 inches to 5 inches. The CRT and Rear projection models can be as thick as 20 inches, which could limit placement of the unit.

3. Compare picture qualities before you buy. Picture quality is determined by screen resolution but there are other factors in as well like the color controls. 4. Consider the connectivity of any unit before you buy. Connectivity is the ability to have multiple hookups connected directly to your HDTV without special equipment. 5. Think of the type of sound package you want if you have a home theater system. A sound package can be one of the trickiest components to deal with. Most HDTVs have superior sound quality and will connect with any home theater system, so this won't be an issue.

7. Shop and compare in-store demo sets. After you've decided what you want, go to show rooms and check them out for yourself. You want to make an investment that will satisfy all your needs.
