How to Put Speakers in a New Cabinet

Speaker cabinets are used for electric musical instruments or simply to secure your speakers to achieve the highest sound quality possible. Given a certain number of conditions, you can put speakers into a new cabinet as long as the speakers are the appropriate size.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Damping material
  • Speaker cabinet
  • Screw driver
  • Speakers (1 to 4)

Step1
Purchase a new speaker cabinet that is compatible with the size of your speakers. If you have 12-inch speakers, your speaker cabinet will need an amplifier that can handle the size of the speaker input (see Tips for more information).
Step2
Assemble all of the components of the speaker cabinet if they are not already in the new one. These include the proper gauge of speaker wiring, amplifier, speaker jack and jack plates, grills and damping material.
Step3
Remove the front panel. Use a screwdriver to take out the screws and gently slide the front panel off of the cabinet.
Step4
Guide the wires through the correct holes. Make sure the wire is of the appropriate gauge. Wire gauges get thicker the smaller the number, so it will depend on what size you need.
Step5
Make sure you have damping material installed. Place the damping material on the wood paneling inside your speaker cabinet.
Step6
Attach the wires to the speakers. This is just a matter of installing the wire into the wire terminals of your speaker. Screw the speakers into position and put the grill over them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Speaker-amp compatibility is determined by the speakers’ impedance level (measured in Ohms), which must match that of the amplifier.
  • Impedance levels for 12-inch speakers are typically 8 ohms. Somewhere on the speaker you will see the number 8 next to a symbol that looks like a horseshoe.
  • Wire your speakers in parallel to decrease the impedance level of your speakers to match that of your amp.
  • Wire your speakers in series to increase the impedance level to match your amp.
  • Putting speakers into a cabinet designed for a different size of speakers will result in a disruption of sound quality.
