Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Figure out what gauge wire you need. If you plan to run wire for less than 80 feet, purchase 16 gauge for the most dynamic sound quality. If the distance is less than 200 feet, buy 14 gauge. If you'll be using more than 200 feet of wire, you’ll need 12 gauge.
Step2
Buy a little more wire than you think you’ll need so that you can just take one trip to the store or place one online order. Measure the distance the wire will span, and then add about 15% to that figure.
Step3
Shop around. Call local hardware stores, electronics stores and check online retailers to see how much your required type and length of wire will cost you. Visit your local Radio Shack or Ace Hardware, or shop online at Internet stores like Crutchfield and Cables To Go (see Resources below).
Step4
Compare prices. Take the figures from the local stores and compare them to the online retailers to determine where you will get the best deal. Remember to consider online shipping charges.
Step5
Buy your wire. Decide where you will get the best deal and purchase your wire without connectors. Depending on how quickly you need the wire, you may need to buy it locally, even if the online pricing is more affordable.
