The Balducci levitation is a trick where you appear to be hovering above the ground. It is commonly performed by street magicians and illusionists. No special equipment or talents are required. You just need a good sense of balance. Use these steps below to perform the Balducci levitation.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand 8 to 10 feet in front of your audience with your back to them. The audience should be on the same level of elevation as you. If you are on a stage, the illusion will be revealed.

  2. Step 2

Turn so that you are standing at a 45-degree angle to the audience's field of view. Slide the foot furthest from the audience slightly in front of the other, but keep your feet and ankles close together. Hold your arms away from your sides at shoulder height. This will provide balance and will distract the audience.

  3. Step 3

Slowly rise up onto the toes of your forward foot while keeping your feet together. This may require a few practice rounds. Your back foot should be completely off the ground, and only the toes of your front foot should be on the ground.

  4. Step 4

Stop when your back foot is 2 to 3 inches off the ground. Hold the pose for a few seconds, with as little shaking and wiggling as possible.

  5. Step 5

Quickly lower both feet to the ground. For additional effect, act as though the levitation was tiring. Revel in the amazement of your audience!

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear long pants when performing this illusion. A longer hem will help block the view of the toes supporting your weight.
  • Wear flexible-soled shoes without significant heels. This will make balancing easier.
  • Don't attempt to go higher than a few inches off the ground.
  • Only hold the pose for a few seconds. The longer you hold it, the more likely the illusion will be revealed.
