You can save a lot of money by purchasing used speakers. There are a few things you should know when you're shopping. Use these guidelines to make a smart speaker purchase.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Locate the used speakers you are interested in.
Step2
Find out what the speakers would cost new.
Step3
Look at the overall condition of the speakers. If they look damaged, don't buy them.
Step4
Examine the speaker cones for cracks, creases, holes or discoloration. The cone should be uniformly round, with very little dust or debris.
Step5
Listen to the speakers. Be wary of any scratching, vibrating noises, reverberations or squeals.
Step6
Find out where the speakers were used before. Avoid speakers that were used outside or in a club. They are likely to be damaged.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the dealer tells you that the speaker has recently been re-coned or serviced, ask for receipts.
  • If the speakers are five years old or older, they should cost less than half of their retail value.
