You don't have to act out any role, gothic lolita is a fashion. You don't have to put on a fake personality to be a gothic lolita, one of the best gothic lolitas I know is very feisty and outgoing. And it is related to western gothic fashion, it's inspired by the black that western goths often where, and if you look at some western gothic dresses, they're not that different to a more aristocrat gothic lolita look. They're just longer, and less lolita like. It's mostly inspired by old new romantic gothica than modern western goth but both trends were inspired by the same trend and cult. Also a lot of western gothic accessories can be used in gothic lolita, just avoid anything too tacky or mean looking. Also above absolutely everything, do research, this is not nearly enough information to go and be a gothic lolita, this is like, only the skeleton of it.

@ Cutelife There are many different singers and song writers that dress in lolita and make many different types of music. You are allowed to listen to whatever you want. @ the guide. The article does seem very watered down. You don't have to act like a little innocent girl in order to pull off the look. I've had lolitas get mad at me for wearing leg warmers with various outfit, saying that I'm not a "true lolita." I don't think there is a true lolita. The style started off with an Idea and a design and it branched off from there. Like other harajuku styles it was about standing out and creating something different. I know a lot of "purist lolitas" would get mad at me for saying this, but you should go with what you want, otherwise you're just following fashion trends. Harajuku and lolita is about breaking those trends and exploring fashion. Have fun with it and don't worry about what others think. Otherwise there would be no gothic lolita fashion.

Oh, dear. While it's not in itself exactly wrong, it fails to encapsulate the spirit of the fashion. This article sounds like the writing of someone who read the Wikipedia article without taking in anything of the soul of the style, then regurgitated every half-fact they could remember. While the look is indeed a doll-like one, it needs more about what the overall aim of lolita is. Lolita takes the romantic aspects of Victorian and Rococo style and gives them a modern twist. The aim is not to titillate or act as though nothing matters but one's nails, but to appear modest, proper and forthright. The styles of clothes are mostly slightly wrong. While a blouse and a skirt are indeed staples of the rori wardrobe, what about jumper skirts, dresses, lace, frills, jabots, shoes, and the particulars of the all-important underwear, such as the shape of the petticoat, the fabrics, the len... -

This article was made by someone who does not have a very good idea of what exactly the fashion is. They have some idea of what it is, but if they had done much research they would know that most lolita make fun of the "lifestyle lolita." We don't necessarily "act lolita," and standing really pidgeon toed and staring at your feet is going to make other lolita think you look silly.

You should be more specific in what you mean by blouses or full skirts. Typically, a lolita blouse will have a rounded collor and probably a lace or ruffle décor. Skirts should be full enough to accomodate a petticoat and usually around knee-length or just a bit shorter. Gothic Lolita typically features a color scheme of black and white, but either all black or all white can sometimes work. For hair, bangs and pigtails are popular, as are porcelain doll-esque ringlets. Hair accessories include headdresses, ribbons, bow headbands, and sometimes bonnets.
