By adding affiliates to your website, you can increase your traffic and exposure as well as make some extra money. With all the affiliate programs available, it can be difficult finding one that's right for your website. Here’s how to find the right one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your needs. The best affiliate programs to have on your site are those that are related to the topic of your website. For example, if your website is about travel, then you should get travel-related affiliate programs. Use websites (see Resources below) to find travel affiliates and many others.

  2. Step 2

Find specific companies. Once you know your needs, go to the websites of companies that deal directly with them. See if those companies have an affiliate program. For example, if you're looking for travel affiliate programs, go directly to companies like Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz. Join their affiliate programs.

  3. Step 3

Search other sites. See what other general websites dealing with your topic use for affiliates. Visit other sites and write down any affiliate programs they have listed and then sign up for them. You can link directly to the sites from the website you're on.

  4. Step 4

Join an affiliate company. Many companies run their affiliate programs through affiliate companies. By registering with these companies you have instant access to thousands of affiliate programs. Popular affiliate companies include "LinkShare" and "Commission Junction."

  5. Step 5

Read about affiliate companies. There's a plethora of good information out there on how to find the right affiliate program for your website. Highly recommended is Rosalind Gardner’s book, “The Super Affiliate Handbook” (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to read the fine print of any affiliate program you join to make sure it will actually accomplish what you want it to.
  • Keep a schedule of when your affiliate agreements expire so you can renew them, if needed.
  • Any money you make from affiliate programs is taxable income.
  • Make sure the affiliate program is selling or promoting legal products.
