How to Use a DVD Disc for Storing Data

DVDs have a much larger storage capacity than CDs. This makes DVDs a great format to store large amounts of data. Follow these steps to find out how to utilize this amazing storage space for your own benefit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with DVD burner
  • Blank DVD

Step1
Make sure the computer that you are using has a DVD-writable drive. A CD burner won’t do the trick here. It has to be a DVD drive. Check the drawer on your computer for the "DVD Recordable" logo.
Step2
Decide which files you want to store on the disc. Move all these files to one location to make the process simpler.
Step3
Insert a blank DVD disc into the drive and wait a few moments to give the computer time to read the disc and make sure that it is blank. When the DVD stops spinning in the drive, you can continue.
Step4
Highlight all the files you want to write to the disc by either dragging a click box around them or clicking each one individually while holding the "Control" key.
Step5
Make sure all the files are highlighted so you can transfer them to the DVD.
Step6
Left click the files and select the “Copy” function. You will need to open the “My Computer” screen and access the blank disc at this time.
Step7
Paste the files into the blank disc’s folder. Depending on how your computer is set up, this may be the last step. However, you may have to click a button on the left of the folder window that says “Write Files to Disc” before the computer will actually begin saving the data to the disc.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless the discs are re-writable, you only get one chance to add data to a disc. It’s best to wait until you have a large amount of data to store.
  • Some DVD discs have more storage capacity than others. Shop around to find the right discs for you.
  • Check that the file transfer was successful and that the disc has the data on it before you delete the files from the computer.
  • If the DVD disc is scratched or damaged in any way, it may not store data correctly.
