Do you want to be able to create your own DVD's in the comfort of your own home? A DVD recorder allows you to transfer home movies from old VHS tapes and digital recorders as well as make copies of movies in case the original gets damaged. Follow these steps to find out what you need to do before you go out and buy a DVD recorder.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Think about what your plans are for the device and what kinds of features you want. What format of DVD's do you want to make? What type of display do you want the machine to have?
Step2
Know the available features of DVD recorders. DVD recorders can come with many features that will help you decide which model is the best for you. Check out DVD recorders for any of the following features:
• NTSC Analog TV tuner, which allows you to record programs on different channels.
• Electronic Programming Guide, which allows you to program your DVD recorder to record TV programs.
• Progressive Scan, which converts the DVD signal to give you a clearer picture.
• Simultaneous Record and Play, which allows you to record a program and play back the same or different program simultaneously.

There are several other features; but the ones listed above are some of the most important. Learn more about different features online (see Resources below).
Step3
Decide on a budget. The amount you plan to spend will greatly affect the number of choices you have when picking out a DVD recorder.
Step4
Consider different brand options. In the world of DVD recorders, it’s not difficult to find high quality and decent prices. The major brands like Sony and Samsung are a sure bet for customer service and quality. But you'll pay a few extra bucks for the same machine. Brands like Sylvania and Panasonic still have the quality but are a little cheaper in general.
Step5
Consider different models. Each brand of DVD recorder will offer a wide variety of models with different prices and features. Some models are a lot more expensive than others simply because of a single feature. It’s important to be aware of each model’s strengths and weaknesses.
Step6
Keep your interests in mind and make a decision based on price, customer service, features and brand.

Tips & Warnings

  • It never hurts to reconsider an item. You might find something new that you like about it the second time around.
  • If you choose to buy a product online, be wary of any site you do business with. Make sure you know and trust the site.
