Most laptops use a touchpad instead of a external mouse to navigate the user interface. Device drivers tell the system how to recognize and interpret the signals from the touchpad. If the drivers are damaged, uninstalled or fail to update correctly, the touchpad my become inoperative. To fix the touchpad, download and install the most recent drivers from the computer manufacturer's website.

Go to the manufacturer's website for your computer.

Locate the touchpad drivers for your computer.

Download and install the drivers by double-clicking on the file and following the prompts as directed. (The installation method may vary with the driver.)
