Soldering is a very tricky skill that takes practice and patience. But once you learn how to solder, you'll be able to save money by repairing your TV on your own. Here are some quick guidelines to follow for soldering when repairing your TV.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Heat the soldering iron. Make sure it is fully heated before beginning work.
Step2
Position the solder against the component lead.
Step3
Hold the soldering iron against the solder until the solder melts.
Step4
Hold the solder at the junction between the printed circuit board foil and the component lead. Move it quickly as soon as the solder melts and then hold it there until the solder melts and flows around the lead and circuit board foil.
Step5
Inspect your work. Remove any solder bridges using a static free solder sucker or a solder braid.
Step6
Clean the printed circuit board. Use a small wire brush and a non-static, non-residue printed circuit board cleaner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a low wattage soldering iron with a grounded tip and make sure it is the right size and shape to maintain a temperature of 500 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Always use the proper gauge of rosin, which will have a composition of 60 parts tin and 40 parts lead.
  • Work quickly, otherwise the circuit board foil or component may overheat.
  • Avoid inhaling the smoke from the solder, as it can cause birth defects.
