How to Determine a Child's Style of Learning

Every child learns differently. The basic styles of learning are:
Auditory--A child primarily learns through listening.
Visual--Children learns by seeing rather than listening.
Kinesthetic--A child learns by doing and moving, touching, feeling and expressive language.
Once a parent understands their child's learning style, it is easier to help their child understand basic educational concepts.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by having the children march across the room, while the rest of the children watch. This is a counting exercise that will give an idea of the different learning styles. All the children, including the one marching across the room, will clap each step and say each number; if the child marches 10 steps the children will clap 10 times and count to 10. Ask each child what they saw. From their conversations a learning style can be determined.

A child that is a visual learner saw the student that marched across the room take 10 steps while counting to ten. A child that is an auditory learner heard counting out loud one to 10 and hears the 10 claps. The kinesthetic learner experienced the 10 steps by moving. Each clap one time, and step marched, one at a time, per number.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is only a simple exercise, not an official determination. There are other tests that can be given to a child to determine a learning style. These can be done in school. Also, a child may need to be medically examined for learning disabilities.

My 4yo is definitely a kinesthetic learner. She has to figure out how things work and do it immediately. I was contemplating the other day what kind of learner she would be labled as and this a helpful article! 5*
