How to Remove a Foreign Object From Beneath a Nail

The most common foreign body that gets stuck beneath a nail is a simple wooden splinter. Splinters are usually easy to remove when they’re in a finger or the bottom of your foot. When the splinter of wood is wedged beneath your nail, though, it’s a different story.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fingernail clippers
  • Antiseptic
  • Soap
  • Splinter forceps or tweezers

Step1
Clip the nail down as closely to the splinter or foreign object as you can. It’s easier if you notch the nail rather than trying to cut straight across.
Step2
Use splinter forceps or tweezers to grip the splinter as close to the skin as possible.
Step3
Gently pull the splinter out. Use a steady pull and avoid any jerking motions.
Step4
Clean the area well with soap and water.
Step5
Apply Betadine ointment or other antiseptic.
Step6
Seek medical treatment if you can’t remove the entire splinter or if the object is larger than a small wood splinter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Splinter forceps are very short and have tiny pincers that are ideal for removing objects trapped beneath a nail.
  • Seek medical treatment if the wound becomes red and irritated, if pus forms in or around it, or if there is swelling in the armpit or groin.
