A nail trimmer is a nail trimmer is a nail trimmer, right? Wrong. There are easily a dozen different styles of nail clippers and trimmers. Some are designed for toenails, some for fingernails. Others are designed for special uses or certain people, such as infants or diabetics who have problems with foot and nail care. Choosing the best nail trimmer can mean the difference between getting the job done well and injuring yourself.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider who and what you’ll be using the nail trimmers for. The best nail trimmers for doing regular trims on an infant will not be the same as the best nail trimmers for an adult.

  2. Step 2

Choose the best-quality clippers that you can afford. Cheap clippers that you buy at the dollar store will have a poor edge and may tear instead of clipping.

  3. Step 3

Choose a straight-edged nail trimmer to cut straight across the nail. Curved trimmers may cut into the soft skin at the sides of the nail.

  4. Step 4

Choose nail trimmers that can be sterilized if needed.

  5. Step 5

Buy heavy-duty clippers for toenails, which are a bit thicker.

Tips & Warnings
  • Trim toenails after bathing, when the nails are softer and easier to cut.
  • A pair of nail trimmers with an attached magnifying glass can make trimming baby’s nails much easier.
  • If you have very thick toenails or a condition such as diabetes that contributes to poor circulation, you may want to have your toenails trimmed by a podiatrist instead of attempting it at home.
