How to Avoid Complications From Mastectomy Surgery

You may think you have little control over your cancer and how it affects you. However, there are little changes you can make to help you along the path to recovery. Knowledge can go a long way to help you avoid complications from mastectomy surgery.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Do your research. Go online to places like the Susan G. Komen Web site or Gilda’s Club (see Resources below), which have up-to-date information on mastectomy surgery. Also visit the library and pick up medical journals, like BMJ, to keep yourself informed.
Step2
Pay attention to restrictions. Do not eat, drink, smoke or take medications during the recommended time prior to your surgery. Also follow any dietary guidelines that the doctor might give you prior to the day of surgery.
Step3
Inform your doctor of any special circumstances. The doctor will need to know if you are pregnant or nursing, have allergies, experience reactions to anesthesia or take medications, herbal supplements or vitamins.
Step4
Make sure you know how to protect yourself from infection. Ask your doctor how to care for your incision and drains, and how to bandage it yourself if you don’t have anyone to help you.
Step5
Ask your doctor about potential complications. Find out the signs of infection or slow healing, and what to do if you come down with a fever or other cold-like symptoms soon after surgery.
Step6
Find someone who will help you after your surgery. Mastectomy surgery can make even the simplest tasks painful. If you have someone to help you, you’ll heal faster if you don't perform stretching and lifting tasks.
Step7
Consult your doctor if anything seems abnormal after your surgery, such as fever, strange marks, pain long after healing and weakness. You know your body better than anyone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your normal daily activities may be difficult for a while after surgery. Don’t overexert yourself, and try to get help whenever you need it.
  • Resume moderate exercise with regard to your doctor’s discretion.
  • Never hesitate to get a second opinion.
