Your wedding is coming fast, and you’re likely curious, concerned or even anxious about applying your makeup for the big day. Rest assured, most brides-to-be think about their make-up for that particular day more than any other day of their lives, so you’re not alone. Following a few guidelines should put your mind at ease.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Professional makeup artist or beauty consultant
  • Makeup

    Caring for Your Skin

  1. Step 1

    Wash your face every day.

  2. Step 2

    Remove your makeup every night.

  3. Step 3

    Exfoliate twice a week.

  4. Step 4

Drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

  5. Preparation

  6. Step 1

Consider hiring a professional makeup artist if you’re inexperienced with applying your own make-up or if you want to make sure everything is perfect.

  7. Step 2

Choose makeup based on the time and place of your wedding. Wear softer and more naturallooking make-up if most of your wedding is during the day or outdoors. Wear bolder and more glamorous make-up if most of your wedding is during the evening or indoors.

  8. Step 3

Choose makeup that will complement your dress and hair. Wear more glamorous makeup if your dress is sophisticated, long or ivory/off-white. Wear more natural-looking makeup if your dress is simple, shorter or white.

  9. Step 4

Schedule a makeup trial run either with the professional makeup artist you hired or schedule a makeup consultation at a salon or department store cosmetics counter if you’re doing it yourself.

  10. Applying Makeup on the Day

  11. Step 1

Start with applying foundation (that closely matches your skin tone) lightly and evenly over your face.

  12. Step 2

Use a natural-looking, powder-based blush next. Start at the hairline by the middle of your ear, blend forward to the front of your cheek, blend back to the hairline and then up, and then apply a bit more powder to the front of your cheek. Repeat for the other side.

  13. Step 3

Apply your chosen lipstick smoothly. Use a lip liner of the same shade after applying lipstick. Make sure there’s no color on your teeth.

  14. Step 4

Work on your eyes last. Use an eyelash curler to curl your eyelashes. Apply eyeliner, then eyeshadow, and finish off with mascara.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pluck or wax your eyebrows a week before your wedding. Fill in with an eyebrow pencil if necessary.
  • Keep some makeup essentials with you (or, better yet, with a bridesmaid) for touch-ups (some lipstick, powder and mascara). You may kiss, eat and drink off some lipstick and cry off some mascara.
  • Get a long-lasting lipstick so you don’t have to reapply it every 10 minutes.
  • Use waterproof mascara.
  • Use foundation with built-in sunscreen for outdoor weddings.
