Athlete’s foot is a very common fungal infection that is easy to treat with over-the-counter medications. The fungus thrives in damp, warm environments so it’s easy to pick it up at the gym or in the locker room. Check these tips to help you determine if you have Athlete’s Foot.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check your feet for cracked or peeling skin, especially on the soles and between your toes.
Step2
Check between your toes for signs of yellow fungal matter.
Step3
Look for signs of extremely dry skin on your heels and the sides of your feet.
Step4
Check your toe nails for signs of thickening, crumbling, raggedness or discoloration.
Step5
Notice how your feet feel. Do you feel itching, stinging or burning between your toes or on the soles of your feet?

Tips & Warnings

  • The number and severity of the symptoms you notice will depend on how long you’ve had the infection. You may not experience all of these symptoms, especially if you haven’t had the condition for very long.
  • Mild cases of Athlete’s Foot can be treated with over-the-counter medications, but you should see your doctor if the condition of your feet does not improve within two weeks, or is not completely cured within four weeks.
  • Never leave Athlete’s Foot untreated, particularly if you have diabetes or any condition that affects your circulation. If you have such a condition, talk to your doctor about treating your Athlete's Foot.
  • If you notice any signs of bacterial infection in your feet such as pain, swelling, tenderness or redness in your feet, see your doctor as soon as possible, especially if this is accompanied by a fever.
