Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Step1
Dial 911 as soon as possible. Give the dispatcher details about your location and your condition.
Step2
Remain calm. Focus on telling the police everything you remember about the crime and the suspect. See the article on How to Describe a Robbery Suspect for more information.
Step3
Resist the urge to shower or clean yourself off immediately following a robbery. The police may be able to use physical evidence (blood, hair, fabric from clothing) that has been left behind by the suspect.
Step4
Ask a neighbor, family member or friend to come over for support.
Step5
Speak to a counselor. Ask the police for a referral or contact the National Center for Victims of Crime (see Resources below). Learn more in the article Find a Victim Support Group After a Robbery.
Step6
Understand that you have the option to remain anonymous when you provide a description of the suspect to the police.
Step7
Get the names and phone numbers of the people assigned to your case. Call them if you discover additional evidence or think of new information.
