If you have a DUI conviction, the court has probably ordered you to attend a DUI class. In most cities, you'll have several options to choose from. To locate the DUI class closest to you, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read thoroughly all the printed material the court gives you regarding the DUI class you must attend. Decide when you can most easily attend DUI class. Many schools now offer evening and weekend classes.

  2. Step 2

If you've lost your license, look for a DUI class near your residence. But don't settle just based on geography: some classes offer more options than others, such as flexible schedules that let you attend class at night or on the weekends.

  3. Step 3

Speak with fellow students in your class if you're feeling alone in your DUI conviction. Some areas have support groups for those going through this process.

  4. Step 4

Hold on to your certificate of completion for the course. You must present this to the court.

Tips & Warnings
  • You have the right to choose a DUI class rather than be assigned one but pick one that fulfills the requirements of the court.
  • Treatment for alcohol abuse is frequently mandated along with DUI classes. Find a support group by visiting Web site of the American Council on Alcoholism (see Resources below).
  • In most states, the Department of Motor Vehicles has information on DUI issues, including how to locate the closest DUI class.
  • If you were convicted of a DUI offense somewhere other than your state of residence, pay close attention to the requirements. Some states have reciprocal agreements to accept other states' DUI class programs. Others are more stringent in their requirements. Never assume anything--always check with the court that convicted you.
  • Having a DUI conviction on your record can be a stigma in a society highly attuned to the hazards of drunk driving. Attend DUI school quietly on your off-hours, without having to miss work, and don't talk about it, just absorb the lessons learned.

on 12/30/2008 Hi Kate

Are you in California? I'm wondering because my boyfriend just got a DUI and I'm reading up and some sites are saying that online courses are not available in CA? Do you have any idea what it takes to be able to take an online course?

THANKS SO MUCH!
Cindy
