Seek Counseling After a Sexual Assault

  1. Step 1

Seek medical attention immediately. If you have been the victim of rape and wish to press charges, it is essential that physical evidence such as semen and hair be collected right after the attack.

  2. Step 2

Speak with the hospital's onsite social worker regarding services available at the facility. This person may refer you to a support group or counselor for individual therapy after treatment for any physical injuries you may have sustained.

  3. Step 3

Contact a rape and sexual assault counselor by calling (800) 656-HOPE or visiting the RAINN Web site (see Resources below). This organization can connect you with services in your area, 24 hours a day.

  4. Step 4

Contact your local rape crisis center or women's shelter to seek counseling after a sexual assault. You can find listings for these services in the phone book under ''crisis center'' or by dialing 411.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not let the inability to pay for care keep you from seeking medical attention after a sexual assault. As a victim of sexual assault, you have the right to free medical attention in many states.
