Get Help Through a Rape Crisis Center

Step1
Utilize the resources of organizations such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (see Resources below) to find a rape crisis hotline number for your state or city.
Step2
Calling (800) 656-HOPE will connect you with a rape crisis center in your area. This is a service provided by RAINN (see Resources below).
Step3
Call 911 and speak with a police officer or visit your local hospital's emergency room. Police and medical professionals can assist you with gathering evidence and filing charges against your attacker.
Step4
Look up ''crisis center'' in your phone book. Also look up listings for crisis center hotlines below headings such as ''crisis intervention centers.'' In addition to providing hotline help, these organizations also can provide basics such as food, clothing, legal aid, or shelter.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you call a rape crisis hotline, your information will be kept confidential. It is your right to retain your privacy even when seeking assistance following a rape.
  • Advocates available through a rape crisis hotline can help you navigate the legal system if you press charges against or sue your attacker. They may be able to refer you to a lawyer to assist you with your case.
  • The effects of domestic violence on women and children include severe depression and self-destructive behavior, which may often lead to suicide.
