From physical assault and robbery to rape and murder, juvenile crime can be terrifying. There are ways, however, to avoid becoming a victim. For example, the way you dress can either increase or diminish your risk of being singled out by juvenile delinquents.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Knowledge of gang clothing
  1. Step 1

Dress comfortably when leaving the house, especially when venturing into high-crime areas. Clothing which provides greater freedom of movement will allow you to get away faster from a potentially dangerous situation.

  2. Step 2

Leave expensive jewelry at home and avoid drawing attention to yourself. Diamond rings and gold chains are more likely to get you noticed.

  3. Step 3

Shop without large purses or wallets when possible. This will reduce the risk of petty theft or assault. When you must take a large purse or wallet, be aware of your surroundings at all times.

  4. Step 4

Ask local law-enforcement officials about common gang clothing in your area. Identifying gang members can help you avoid them.

  5. Step 5

Contact the police immediately if you are the victim of a crime. File a police report while the events are fresh in your mind and evidence can be gathered.

  6. Step 6

Hire an attorney or work with the district attorney's office to press charges against your perpetrator.

  7. Step 7

Visit the Center for Victims of Violence and Crime Web site for information on support groups designed to help victims (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Being a victim of juvenile crime can leave you with a lot of confusing emotions. You may feel anxious when out in public, fearful of future attacks or a continued sense of insecurity. While these feelings are normal, know that there are resources, such as support groups and therapy, that can help you deal with these emotions.
