Liver cancer, the uncontrolled multiplication of cancerous cells in the liver, is diagnosed in approximately 16,000 people each year. The chances of developing this cancer can be greatly reduced by making some changes in your lifestyle and by taking some precautions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Safeguard your kids. Vaccinate your children at an early age against hepatitis B since it is one of the leading factors in developing liver cancer. 70 percent of carriers contract hepatitis during childhood. Making sure your kids are given this vaccine will greatly reduce their chances of getting liver cancer later in life.
Step2
Reduce your chances of contracting hepatitis C by practicing safe sex and refraining from using intravenous drugs. Those who share needles or who participate in sex with multiple partners are more likely to contract hepatitis C, which can lead to liver cancer.
Step3
Moderate your consumption of alcoholic beverages. Cirrhosis of the liver, one of the leading causes of the development of liver cancer, is the result of excessive alcohol consumption.
Step4
Stop smoking. Smoking is a significant cause of several cancers and should be avoided at all costs.
Step5
Eat nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables offer the body a natural way to boost the immune system and thus ward off sicknesses.
Step6
Maintain your positive health changes. Quit smoking for good. If you lose weight, keep it off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Verify that you have been vaccinated against hepatitis B. If you aren't sure, ask your physician about getting the vaccine.
  • If you are diagnosed with cancer, find out what your rights are in regards to your state's medical leave laws. This information is available through the National Partnership for Women and Families.
  • Ask your primary care physician if you are at a high risk for cancer, and ask for help preventing the disease.
  • If you or a loved one is diagnosed with liver cancer, you may develop signs of depression or anxiety. Consider joining a support group.
