Hodgkin's disease refers to several cancers that originate in the lymphatic system, which is responsible for the production and maintenance of white blood cells. The cancer usually originates in the lymph nodes in the upper chest and neck, but can start anywhere in the lymphatic system. It is one of the more treatable forms of cancer, with survival rates of about 93 percent according to the American Cancer Society, but it is also one of the least understood.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Doctors do not currently understand Hodgkin's disease well enough to produce a list of risk factors. There are no specific steps for preventing the development of Hodgkin's disease.
Step2
People with reduced immune systems are considered more likely to develop Hodgkin's disease. Those suffering from AIDS or other ailments that diminish the white blood cell count appear to be more susceptible.
Step3
Poor diet and lack of exercise cause a number of different problems. It is possible that these two factors could also have an effect on your risk of developing Hodgkin's disease.
Step4
When taking drugs that suppress your immune system, be extra careful to protect your health. These drugs are common for those who have received organ transplants.

Tips & Warnings

  • Smoking is considered one of the chief risk factors in many different health problems, including cancer. If you are currently a smoker, quitting will dramatically decrease your risk of developing a number of different diseases.
  • Always ask your doctor whether the swelling of your lymph nodes is normal. Lymph nodes swell when people are sick since white blood cells combat illness. Thus swollen lymph nodes are not always indicative of Hodgkin's disease.
  • Dealing with the pain and stress of Hodgkin's disease is tough enough without having to deal with depression and fear as well. Talk to your doctor about prescriptions or techniques that will help you keep focused on fighting the disease with a positive attitude.
  • Remember that as a patient, you have the right to be fully informed about your diagnosis and your path of treatment.
