Biological therapy is a new cancer treatment used to direct the immune system to kill cancer cells and keep cancer from spreading to other areas of the body. It is also used in the treatment of the side effects of other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that biological therapy is used to treat cancer by improving how the immune system works. Explore all forms of cancer treatment and realize that unlike chemotherapy, biological treatment is much more organic, using natural substances to kill the cancer.

  2. Step 2

Research the immune system. Since the immune system is the main area that biological therapy targets, knowing how the immune system works is an excellent way to explore how biological therapy treats cancer. White blood cells are a major part of the immune system, and they are used to find and fight infection and disease. Biological therapy helps to boost those white cells.

  3. Step 3

Specify what type of cancer biological therapy is expected to treat. Biological therapy may not be an option for all types of cancer, so be specific when researching. For instance, biological therapy would work well on kidney cancer that, once the tumors are removed surgically, still has a chance of recurring.

  4. Step 4

Experience the staging process. Knowing what stage of cancer you are researching helps in the exploratory process, as certain biological therapies may not be appropriate for all stages of cancer.

  5. Step 5

Realize that sometimes biological therapy is used to control the side effects of other cancer treatments, such chemotherapy.

Tips & Warnings
  • You have the right to choose your health care provider to ensure the highest-quality treatment.
  • Ask your doctor what the side effects of biological therapy are, especially if you live an active lifestyle or live alone. An active lifestyle may have to be adjusted to accommodate the side effects of biological therapy, which can include fatigue.
  • Impending treatment can cause severe stress in some people, but don't feel as though you have to face it alone. Visit a counselor and ask about antidepressants, or attend a support group to see how others are coping with cancer treatments such as biological therapy.
