  1. Step 1

Be aware that the the method or methods used for prostate cancer pain management vary from individual case to individual case. If something isn't working for you, your doctor is likely to try an alternative method.

  2. Step 2

Consider using hormone therapy. Prostate cancer needs testosterone to continue to grow and spread. By lowering testosterone levels, growth and spread can be managed, and pain can be relieved or prevented. This treatment may require lifestyle changes, though, as sexual dysfunction is a common side effect.

Some 80-90 percent of men report pain relief thanks to radiotherapy.

  4. Step 4

Know that bone inflammation can be reduced through the use of steroids. This treatment is usually prescribed to men whose spine is affected by a tumor.

  5. Step 5

Use bisphosphonates to treat problems caused by advanced-stage prostate cancer that has spread into the bones. Bone fractures, bone pain and calcium entering the blood stream can all be prevented with bisphosphonates.

  6. Step 6

Take chemotherapy drugs to shrink the cancer tumor and thereby help relieve nerve pain. You should know, though, that these drugs cannot cure your tumor. They can only shrink it and help manage the pain tumors cause.

  7. Step 7

Be aware of what side effects may result from pain management strategies. Among the most common are nausea, fatigue and bowel irregularities.
