Ovarian cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells in the tissue of the ovaries. Whether you have had ovarian cancer yourself or have a loved one who has battled the disease, you may feel the need to bring ovarian cancer to the attention of others. Luckily, there are many organizations you can join, as well as ways that you can raise awareness for a cancer that affects 1 out of every 70 women.

    Raise Your Own Awareness

  1. Step 1

Be informed about ovarian cancer. Know statistics about the disease and have your facts straight about risk factors, symptoms and treatments.

  2. Step 2

Know what your resources are. Use national organizations, community resources and the Internet to gather and spread information.

  3. Step 3

Use your established contacts and networks to raise awareness. Don't underestimate the power of spreading the news about ovarian cancer among friends, colleagues and family members.

  4. Raise Awareness for Ovarian Cancer

  5. Step 1

Participate in national events like cancer awareness month and walks or runs for cancer awareness. Many times, events like the American Cancer Society 'Relay for Life' allow people to collect donations to raise money for cancer research (see Resources below).

  6. Step 2

Volunteer your time. Get involved with support groups, fund raisers or community resources for cancer patients. Providing transportation for cancer patients is one such opportunity.

  7. Step 3

Join a national organization. Groups like the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance provide many opportunities for members to help raise awareness about ovarian cancer (see Resources below).

  8. Step 4

Consider being an advocate for ovarian cancer. Advocates get involved at the legislative level in order to make people who can make changes aware of ovarian cancer.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you prepare to return to the workplace, know that companies cannot discriminate against your past history as a cancer patient when it comes to hiring, firing or providing health benefits.
  • Ask your doctor or other health care providers how you can get involved in raising ovarian cancer awareness in your area. You may be able to find opportunities with patients at the same hospital or medical facility where you were treated.
  • One of the more serious symptoms of ovarian cancer is the psychological and emotional trauma experienced by ovarian cancer patients. If you or a loved one are experiencing the intense depression or anxiety so common when living with cancer, seek help.
