Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the tissues that surround and fill the space between the organs. It can affect the fluids that are present in our bodies, as well. Mesothelioma is a difficult cancer to treat since simple surgery isn't typically an option for the removal of tumors. Radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy are the most common treatments for mesothelioma, but both have a host of side effects. It's possible to effectively deal with them, however, and reduce the amount of discomfort felt during treatment.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  1. Step 1

Explore the possibility of alternative medicine, but know that some alternative medicines have been shown to conflict with cancer treatments. Visit the American Cancer Society's web site to learn specific risks (see Resources below). Some alternative remedies are known to reduce pain without relying on heavy prescription drugs.

  2. Step 2

Ask your doctor to give you a painkiller that is capable of reducing the discomfort of the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Your options may be limited depending on the stage your cancer has reached, but there is always some form of pain relief available.

  3. Step 3

Understand that fatigue, nausea, hair loss, bruising and sores are all common side effects of chemotherapy. These side effects are known to dissipate with time once you've completed your chemotherapy.

  4. Step 4

Ask your doctor about specific side effects in relation to the drugs that are expected to be administered during your chemotherapy treatment. Some side effects are common with the use of specific drugs, while others are less prevalent.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be sure to have a say in the choice of treatment used to cure your mesothelioma. The Patient's Bill of Rights gives you the freedom to ask about, request, authorize or refuse any treatment that can be used to help you overcome cancer.
  • Ask your doctor about alternative practices that might ease the side effects. Ask for his or her thoughts on acupuncture, acupressure, meditation and ozone therapy.
  • Follow up your treatments by making positive changes to your lifestyle. The time post-treatment is an ideal one to start eating, exercising and living more healthfully.
  • Get a second opinion, both about your diagnosis and the recommended treatments for your mesothelioma. A second opinion can reinforce or contradict the first. Further insight will help you make the most informed decision about how to proceed in regards to your treatment.
  • Recognize depression and anxiety early on. Seek the help of a support group, therapist or religious leader to help you cope with your flood of feelings.
